Walk a Mile in HER Shoes: ES major Alyssa Bosold is raisingawareness of sexual assault issues

ES major Alyssa Bosold (’13) and student group Students Against Sexual Violence (SASA) have launched the "14 Days to End Sexual Violence" campus initiative (Nov 1-14).  Last week fellow students took up the challenge to “walk a mile in HER shoes” – see photo below!

Wednesday November 7:

Reconstructing Norms: Sexual Violence Prevention at Gettysburg College. 4:30-5:30 Breidenbaugh conference room (3rd Floor).Melissa Mattson of Survivors Inc. discusses climate for sexual assault prevention and awareness at a “public” WGSPAC (WGS Program Advisory Committee) meeting.

Thursday November 8:

Discussion and Dessert 8:30 Breidenbaugh 205 Guest speakers including DPS, Melissa Mattson from Survivors, Dr. Kathy Bradley from Counseling Services, and Joe Gurreri of Greek Life, will speak about reporting sexual misconduct on campus. Dessert will be provided.

*After the meeting, gather a small group of students (probably SASA members) interested in learning more about policy and reporting. Group will work with College Life to start raising awareness

Friday November 9:

Report It Campaign Begins Distribute posters that explain (in simple terms) the process of reporting, why it is important to report. Posters should go in bathroom stalls.

Saturday November 10:

Seniorita Extraviada Movie Showing and Potluck Dinner 5:30, The Women’s Center. Film deals with violence against women on the US/Mexico border. Potluck dinner with Mexican dishes will be served. Discussion will take place after the film.

 

Sunday November  11:

Slut Walk Gettysburg: Stride of Pride attend Sunday SERVO brunch in Saturday night attire, carry posters to reject the notion that women are “asking for rape” based on their attire or actions Meet at 11:45 at the Women’s Center or on the Second floor of the library (near the bathrooms), SASA members will hand out signs, etc. Come dressed in “slut” attire, or change when you get to the meeting points. We will walk to brunch at 12. Officer Wunder and other female DPS officers will escort us. Tables will be reserved in SERVO.

Monday November 12:

Purple and Turquoise Day wear these colors to support/raise awareness about sexual violence

CUB Tables: Selling Scarves with Project Gaia ($15 for one scarf, $25 for two—student charge is available). Scarves made by the Former Women Fuelwood Carriers Association (FWFCA). The FWFCA is a group of women Ethiopia who formerly spent long hours collecting wood and inhaling dangerous woodsmoke. At this table we will distribute more information about the FWFCA, the physical dangers of woodfuel cooking and about Project Gaia—a Gettysburg-based initiative to support clean cooking for women in the developing world.

Tuesday November 13:

I’m not a Victim, but my Friend Is; Penn Hall Lyceum, 8:00pm Discussion with Survivors Inc. and SASA with information about reporting sexual assault and warning signs that a friend is a victim. Participants will be entered in a raffle to win gift cards to the Commons, Bella U, and the Bookstore.
